Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is a severe form of dengue fever that requires immediate attention. It’s crucial for parents to recognize its signs and manage care effectively.
1. What is DHF?
DHF is a more severe form of dengue that includes increased bleeding, blood vessel damage, and low platelet count. It can progress to dengue shock syndrome (DSS), which can be life-threatening.
2. Symptoms to Watch For
High fever lasting 2-7 days, Severe abdominal pain, Persistent vomiting Bleeding (gums, nose, or easy bruising), Fatigue and restlessness, Cold or clammy extremities
3. Warning Signs After Fever Drops
When the fever decreases, the risk of complications rises. Look for:- Increased bleeding, Weak pulse or low blood pressure, Sudden drop in temperature
If these occur, seek emergency medical care immediately, as they may indicate DSS.
4. Home Care Guidelines
If advised for home care, follow these steps:
Hydration: Give fluids frequently (ORS, coconut water, soups).
Medication: Use only acetaminophen (paracetamol) for pain and fever. Avoid NSAIDs like ibuprofen and aspirin.
Rest: Ensure your child rests well to recover strength.
Monitor Closely: Watch for any worsening signs like bleeding or breathing difficulties and get medical help right away. Early detection and proper care can prevent severe outcomes of DHF. Stay alert and ensure your child gets the right care.
